Michael J. Whalen Award for Excellence in Journalism A Project of CLAS Department of Journalism: Journalism Fund

Mike Whalen '70 (CLAS) was only 36 years old when he was killed by an impaired driver in 1979. Already a veteran of several newspapers in Connecticut and Pennsylvania, he was assistant metropolitan desk editor at the Courant at the time of his death. He also had been editor-in-chief of the Daily Campus.

Established in his honor, the Michael J. Whalen Award for Excellence in Journalism is awarded every spring to a student, selected by a committee of his friends and former colleagues.
