Pre-Vet Club Alternative Spring Break A Project of Ignite 2016

This year members of the UConn Pre-Vet Club are preparing for our second annual alternative spring break, on a mission to care for underserved animals! We are students with a passion for helping all animals, especially those unable to attain proper veterinary care. This March, eleven UConn Pre-Vet Club students will be spending their spring break volunteering in Nicaragua, Honduras, and Ecuador at spay/neuter clinics and wildlife rehabilitation centers.

UConn students will be working with a local wildlife rehabilitation center on the island of Roatan, Honduras. This center takes in injured, abandoned and confiscated wildlife. We will work as a group to help the animals in need by preforming annual exams and treatments, including blood draws/blood screen, TB testing, physical exams, parasite testing and treatments, preventive health care treatments and any needed medical or surgical procedures on the wildlife at the center. Not only will we gain amazing experience from this once in a lifetime opportunity, but we will be able to better the lives of wildlife in need of proper medical care.

UConn Pre-Veterinary students will also be traveling to Granada, Nicaragua and Otavalo, Ecuador to provide veterinary care to companion animals that would not receive help otherwise. They will be helping with a large-scale spay/neuter campaign. These actions will assist in the reduction of the stray animal overpopulation and provide pet owners in the area veterinary care that their animals would not normally have access to. They will also participate in an outreach day, where they travel to an underprivileged area that is not able to go to the clinic to receive veterinary care.

The funds that we raise will go towards airfare, housing, and participation fees. If we have the fortunate opportunity to raise more than what is needed for these two trips, the remainder will be used toward other pre-vet club outreach programs. These trips cost each participant around $2000 and, as students, they could really use your help!

Please consider giving an $11 donation to represent the 11 excited UConn students going on the alternative break.

Every penny counts! Please help the UConn Pre-Vet club members make it to Honduras, Nicaragua, and Ecuador!
