Student Research Fellowship Program A Project of School of Dental Medicine
The summer Student Research Fellowship Program is designed to provide a research enrichment experience and exposure to basic, clinical and behavioral research. A popular and competitive program for nearly three decades, the program is offered to entering and first year dental students intent on exploring and developing their appreciation for research as part of their overall preparation for dental school and a dental career. Students are encouraged to explore the faculty and research departments and centers' listings to identify areas of interest, ongoing research themes and initiatives by departmental focus, and current initiatives, recent publications, and the future initiatives of specific faculty members. Accepted students commit approximately 40 hours per week during the summer to carry out their research projects under the guidance of faculty members and their research staff. Students learn about research ethics, and many have the opportunity to travel to a national meeting to present their research.
Students receive a modest stipend to cover the cost of their time dedicated to the project as well as the supplies needed to present and communicate their findings. Travel costs to conferences are not guaranteed to be covered by the stipend at this time. Although the demand for this program is increasing, resources for this important experience are scarce. UConn School of Dental Medicine is committed to keeping and growing this program into the future, actively reaching out for critical private support. The field of dental medicine is constantly changing. UConn's School of Dental Medicine remains one of the country's leading institutions because it continually strengthens and grows its renowned academic, research and clinical programs to meet the challenges of tomorrow.
